Teacher offered fine option for sexually assaulting teenage girl
The ruling was too lenient when compared with the weight of the crime.
A teacher in Edo State named Rotimi Olayemi, has been sentenced to four years in prison for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.
Olayemi, 47, was sentenced by the Egor Magistrates’ Court, Benin, Edo State. He was arraigned on four counts bothering on sexual assault.
Mrs. Osasu Ewemade,
who was the prosecutor in the case told the court that Olayemi,
committed the crime on May 26, 2014, in his office in the college.
He invited the to young girl to his office where he hugged, kissed and fondled her.
The
act is a violation of Section 360 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48, Vol.
II, Law of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in
Edo.
Though the defendant pleaded not guilty to
the charges, Mrs. Igho Braimoh, the presiding magistrate found him
guilty on all counts and sentenced him to one year in prison for each
count.
She offered the defendant, Rotimi Olayemi, an option of fine which involves the payment of N50,000 for each of the counts.
